Mortar a winner at Wembley

The strength, versatility and ability to allow some movement during its working life were the main reasons why a factory-produced lime:sand mortar was specified for the new Wembley Stadium in West London.

Contractor Pyramid Builders used the mortar for blockwork and external facing brickwork at the stadium. Tarmac supplied nearly 2000 tonnes of  mortar - mainly a natural coloured class three lime:sand material - from its west London plant at Gerrards Cross.

The movement that a lime:sand mix allows a building during and after construction was ideal for a stadium that requires minimum maintenance and yet must withstand the rigours of high visitor footfall – nearly 1.5 million soccer and rugby fans visit Wembley each year, notwithstanding the frequent music concerts.

Tarmac commercial manager, John Metheringham, said, "Pyramid carried out an exceptional job on the stadium. The project lasted in excess of three years and was one of the highest profile building and construction contracts we have completed. Tarmac was pleased it could be a part of the construction of this national icon."
